Juan Pablo Gatica, aka JOTAPé, is an internationally renowned Chilean artist, ranked among the top 100 muralists in the world. What particularly sets his work apart is the holistic approach he adopts. He uses natural, environmentally-friendly pigments and water-resistant paints, with an emphasis on the brush technique. It was while studying architecture that Juan Pablo discovered the art of interior design, a passion that has profoundly influenced his mural style.

The alliance between

man and nature

A monumental mural!

Urban art invites itself to Questembert

A majestic work of art has taken shape on the gable wall of the Buttes complex, a gymnasium located opposite the Lycée Marcellin-Berthelot. Created by Chilean muralist JOTAPé, the fresco reflects the alliance between man and nature. Promoted by the municipality, in partnership with the Lycée Marcellin-Berthelot and supported by Questembert Communauté, this project highlights a unique mural art form. Unlike graffiti, JOTAPé favors the brush for his creations, bringing finesse and detail to his frescoes, a true signature of his style.

A technical challenge

The entire gable wall was entirely decorated, despite its complexity due to its irregular structure, made up of “teeth”. To realize this project, the artist designed his work taking into account different angles of contemplation. Completed in October 2024, this artistic work took almost three weeks to complete. JOTAPé was assisted by Rosa, an artist with whom he usually collaborates.

The work invites us to reflect on the way they perceive the world:

Do we admire its beauty, or do we limit our gaze by our own barriers? This fresco, bathed in vivid colors and complex layers, invites us to a visual meditation on humanity’s relationship with the world. A woman and a man stand at the center of the composition, symbolizing duality and balance. The woman holds a delicate, glowing orb – a gesture that conveys care, wonder and the fragility of existence. Her companion looks towards an open sky populated by soaring birds, juxtaposing freedom and potential against the contained geometry of the wall. JOTAPé describes the inspiration behind the fresco as rooted in existentialism, exploring the myths, portraits and dualists of the cycle of life. The imagery seems to capture moments of birth, growth and transcendence. Flowers bloom and melt into ethereal landscapes, while jellyfish drift gently in cascading water, evoking the mysterious connection between the terrestrial and the aquatic, the tangible and the intangible. The use of color adds another dimension. Blues and purples evoke tranquility and introspection, while reds and yellows radiate warmth and vitality. This interplay of hues reflects the existential tension between life’s fleeting moments and the eternal questions that bind us all. This fresco goes beyond aesthetics; it creates a space for dialogue and introspection. It challenges us to reconsider the way we perceive the world!

A second mural at the lycée entrance

JOTAPé has also created an inspiring mural at the entrance to Bâtiment D of the Lycée Marcellin-Berthelot. Entitled “Ofrenda par hoy”, the mural enriches the educational environment and encourages reflection on identities and cultures. It bears witness to the encounter between art and education. This fresco embodies the values of universalism and artistic freedom. To find out more, click here.
