Located in the former town square, this covered market was built in 1552 by Jérôme De Carné, Earl of Cohignac and creator of the fairs held in Questembert.
They will be restored in 1675 by a local entrepreneur worthy of his name, Estienne Charpentier. Generally covered, the Halles are designed to house, delimit and regulate a commercial exchange zone. The market is the privileged place of conviviality where goods and information are exchanged. In the past, drapers, ropemakers, cobblers, peasants met there to sell their goods which constituted the main activity of the fairs of yesteryear. A large weekly regional market takes place on Monday mornings all year round, and a local farmers' market on Wednesdays at the end of the day (from 5 p.m.) all year round. Listed as a Historic Monument, the Halles also host events throughout the year: fairs, concerts, garage sales and other cultural events.
