Located about twenty kilometers from Ploërmel and 30 minutes from Vannes, Saint-Marcel is one of the high places of the French Resistance. It was on the outskirts of this small town in the interior of Morbihan that an unparalleled mobilizing maquis was formed in the spring of 1944, where several thousand young Breton Resistance fighters were armed and trained with a view to resuming the fight for the liberation of our territory. The battles they fought against the German army on June 18, 1944, exactly four years after General de Gaulle called for resistance from London, are remembered. This "battle of Saint-Marcel" will remain as a unique example of fraternity in arms between the SAS paratroopers of Free France dropped a few days earlier to arm the Resistance and harass the enemy, and the young maquisards supported and supplied by the inhabitants of the territory in defiance of the danger. Located on the very site of these battles, the Resistance Museum in Brittany invites you to discover, over 1,000 m² of exhibition space, the daily life of the Bretons under the occupation and their involvement in the Army of the Shadows until the battles for Liberation. A completely renewed scenography highlights its exceptional collections steeped in history and emotion. Many audiovisual and multimedia devices allow an immersion in the heart of occupied Brittany. A historical and educational visit for the whole family, which makes everyone aware of the duty to remember and pays tribute to the courage of the freedom fighters. Open all year except January. Schools and groups: contact the museum.
