In the 17th century, the “U”-shaped halls were fully open to the outside, facilitating merchants’ visibility and traffic flow. Square-section pillars directly supported the wooden framework. Over time, the halls became a storage area for the fire department and some merchants. Later, their architecture evolved towards a total closure of the spaces in order to offer new activities: administrative and tourist activities in particular. Since June 2017, the Halles have been home to the Tourist Office.
On the site of today’s soap factory was theformer seigniorial prison, dating from the 17th century. Convicted prisoners and those awaiting trial were held here. The building later served as ahotel, run by the Burban family.
The Town Hall has changed locations several times before this one. It used to be a private house. Of note: the remarkable wisteria is over two hundred years old, making it one of the oldest in Brittany. Its voluble stems curl in a clockwise direction, indicating that it is a Wisteria floribunda, the Japanese wisteria.
