All aboard for

Lorient La Base

Start your adventure in Lorient Bretagne Sud with a visit to Lorient La Base. This site is steeped in history and emotion. The stonework here dates back to the Second World War, when the German occupiers erected these reinforced concrete behemoths to house the famous U-boats of the Battle of the Atlantic. They were one of the reasons why 80% of Lorient was destroyed by Allied bombing raids.

Today, Lorient La Base has undergone a metamorphosis! Military functions have given way to a cultural and nautical hub unique in Morbihan. Museums and discovery areas rub shoulders with ocean racing teams and their Formula 1s moored just a stone’s throw away.

Things to do in Lorient La Base:

  • For history buffs: follow the guide in the so-called K3 to discover all the nooks and crannies of the Lorient submarine base, or enter one of the only submarines that can be visited in France, at the Flore S645 submarine & its museum. To explore the local underwater world and its treasures, head for the Musée Sous-Marin du Pays de Lorient.
  • For those curious about sailing: visit the Cité de la Voile Eric Tabarly and immerse yourself in this world through their interactive museography. In summer, don’t miss the guided tours of the ocean racing center to learn all the secrets of this high-flying sport!
  • For lovers of unusual activities: climb to the very top of the Tour des Vents and take to the water with La TyRoll. Are you up for the challenge? The breathtaking views alone are well worth the climb!
