The stonework here dates back to the Second World War, when the German occupiers erected these reinforced concrete behemoths to house the famous U-boats of the Battle of the Atlantic. They were one of the reasons why 80% of Lorient was destroyed by Allied bombing raids.

Today, Lorient La Base has undergone a metamorphosis! Military functions have given way to a cultural and nautical hub unique in Morbihan. Museums and discovery areas rub shoulders with ocean racing teams and their Formula 1s moored just a stone’s throw away.
