Rochefort-en-Terre

Britain’s city of stone and flowers

It is a pleasure to stroll through this Petite Cité de Caractère®, born in the 12th century, and located on a rocky spur. Labeled The Most Beautiful Villages in France® Rochefort-en-Terre has preserved an exceptional built heritage that makes its reputation: its superb château, its fortifications, its church ND de la Tronchaye, its washhouse, its 16th and 17th century dwellings with well flowered granite facades. Here, every detail is taken care of. Cobbled streets, stylized signs, the town seems a little jewel nestled in the heart of Morbihan. Rocefort-en-Terre was even elected Favorite Village of the French in 2016.

Heritage Tour

The village is favored by many many painters at the beginning of the 20th century. Alfred Klots, an American painter, fell in love with Rochefort-en-Terre on his first visit in 1903 and decided to buy, in 1907, the ruins of the old medieval castle and its outbuildings, of which he was going to turn into a magnificent castle. The Association of the Castle of Rochefort-en-Terre, offers you to discover this monument and the Klots family with a interactive tour.

A beautiful village in bloom

Rochefort-en-Terre

Labeled a “4-flower” village in bloom

Flowering is a tradition in Rochefort-en-Terre : at the beginning of the 20th century the American painter Alfred Klots who did a lot for the city and in particular the restoration of the castle, encouraged the Rochefortais to flower their houses and balconies by creating an annual prize for the most beautiful planter, proposing to them during the winter, to shelter their most fragile plants in the castle’s greenhouse, this tradition has continued since 1945. Rightly so, Rochefort-en-Terre can pride itself on being one of the 1st villages in bloom in France.
